A comprehensive guide to the works of James Hilton is provided in A James Hilton Companion by John R. Hammond.  This reference work provides a guide to Hilton’s entire works – novels, short stories, nonfiction, and film adaptations.  It gives a detailed account of his life and literary career (including a complete chronology), a listing of his works, and a key to the important characters and locations.  It also includes a section on the adaptations of his novels into films.

John Hammond also wrote the Lost Horizon Companion, which provided a comprehensive guide to Hilton’s famous novel.  It includes chapters on the initial critical reception of the book, its publishing history and the success of its major film adaptations, together with appendices recommending questions for those looking to discuss or study this novel.  

John R. Hammond was a former research fellow at Nottingham Trent University in England and was founder of the James Hilton and H.G. Wells Societies.
